Mr. Brooks is an English movie starred by Kevin Costner & Demi Moore and released in the year 2007. I watched this movie over the weekend to kill the time as I have lots of time nowadays. Mr. Brooks is a crime thriller type of movie; Kevin Costner takes the lead role in the movie and plays as Mr. Brooks. The gorgeous looking Demi Moore stars as a detective who tries to unravel the secrets in the crimes, which happen in the movie. The movie is about a serial killer whose passion is to kill people; the movie revolves around this serial killer and the detective who tries to catch him.
Normally for a movie of such a plot will always revolve around the killer Vs the Cop, their struggle to catch up with each other like Tom & Jerry cartoon. But this movie revolves around the lives of the serial killer and the detective while they are doing their job. One big thing I noticed in the movie is the killer and the cop never saw eye to eye in the entire movie until the very end of the movie, which makes the movie very interesting to watch.
The Story starts with an award function where Mr. Brooks has been awarded “The Best man of the year” from business community, Mr. Brooks delivers a nice speech, shows his love for the box business, love for his country, community Blah!! Blah!! Blah.
After the award function Mr.Brooks gets into the car along with his wife and starts driving towards his house, his wife starts talking about the food in the party etc but Mr. Brooks could not concentrate on his wife, he starts to fight with his inner conscience to overcome the serial killer instinct. The director has shown this sequence by placing a third person in the car, who is visible and audible only to Mr. Brooks. The series of conversation between Mr. Brooks, Mrs. Brooks and Mr. Brooks conscience is a wonderful treat for movie watchers.
Kevin Costner has done exceptionally well in this sequence, he juggles between himself and his inner conscience and yet manages to answer the Mrs. Brooks too. Slowly the inner conscience makes Mr. Brooks find that killer attitude and provokes him to start his killing spree again.
Mr. Brooks pulls over his car and looks at the dancing couples in an apartment and marks them. Then as usual he drops his wife in their house and he and Marshall, Mr. Brooks inner conscience plan what to do that night, Mr Brooks gets into the couples apartment and kills them. This is how the killing spree starts in the movie; Mr. Brooks from now on will be called as the “Thumb Print Killer”, who never leaves any clue in the crime scene. After the incident Mr. Brooks and Mr. Marshall feels satisfied and go to sleep.
Next day in office, Mr. Brooks meets his daughter, who is pregnant and left her studies for good, this pains Mr. Brooks, at the same time a man enters Mr. Brooks office and hands him a photograph which was taken the previous night at crime scene. Suddenly, Mr. Brooks’s blood gushes through his vein and his heart starts beating fast, he summons the man to his conference room and asks his daughter to leave for home.
As usual the man called Mr. Smith threatens Mr. Brooks to make him a partner in his crime, as he also loves killing. The director shows it in a manner that there are so many people who are willing to kill people for the sake of killing not for gain or anything just watch people die. Also movie shows how Mr. Brooks trying to over come Mr. Marshall’s influence to get out of the habit of killing people. He attends counseling classes for alcoholics to over come his addictiveness to killing. Well he never says he is addicted to alcohol or killing, but when Mr. Brooks says, “I am an addict” to the counselor the movie watchers know what he his referring too.
I have seen many movies, which deal with serial killers, will have a logic or a motive for the crime, but in this movie the motivation is like falling in love, Mr. Brooks kills all the people who makes his blood gushes through his veins or make his heart beats faster, that’s his passion. The movie has many sequences in which Mr. brooks end up killing many people and finally kills Mr. Smith after making him the Thumb print killer and escapes for ever.
The movie ends with a struggle, which Mr.brooks continues with Mr.Marshall ……
