Sridhar Vembu Expands Zoho’s Tenkasi Model Nationwide: Rural Tech Revolution Gains Momentum
Tenkasi / Chennai / Lucknow — Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, is scaling up his celebrated Tenkasi model—a blueprint for building high-tech rural ecosystems—across India. Even as global tech giants grapple with layoffs and urban cost pressures, Zoho is doubling down on its no-layoff philosophy and expanding into new rural centers, including eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madurai, and Tirunelveli, with plans to establish a new AI and robotics R&D centre in Kerala.
From Tenkasi to the Nation
Launched in 2011, Zoho’s Tenkasi hub in southern Tamil Nadu has become a living example of how global software products can be built outside metropolitan cities. Today, it employs nearly 900 professionals—most of them from surrounding districts—contributing to Zoho’s suite of world-class enterprise software products.
Encouraged by this success, Sridhar Vembu now envisions replicating the Tenkasi model across India. “If the leadership and local commitment exist, every region can produce world-class talent,” he has said in multiple interviews. His expansion into eastern Uttar Pradesh represents Zoho’s first major rural initiative in northern India, with a focus on creating hundreds of local tech jobs and curbing youth migration to urban centers.
A Human-Centered Work Philosophy
At a time when the global tech industry faces uncertainty, Zoho’s no layoff policy stands out as a cornerstone of its employee-first culture. Vembu has repeatedly affirmed that Zoho will not lay off staff even during downturns, emphasizing that “it’s better to cut profits than cut people.”
Complementing this approach, the company recently introduced a “Zero Notice Period” policy, designed to enhance employee flexibility and autonomy—a rarity in India’s corporate environment.
Beyond Urban Innovation
Zoho’s rural expansion aims to decentralize India’s tech economy, proving that innovation is not confined to metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or Pune. The upcoming R&D facility in eastern Uttar Pradesh will focus on deep tech, AI, and product development, aligning with Zoho’s broader vision of nurturing local ecosystems.
Vembu has publicly stated his ambition to build 100 rural tech hubs across India, integrating modern infrastructure with nature-friendly designs and fostering long-term sustainability.
Redefining the Future of Work
Zoho’s experiment with rural hubs is more than a business strategy—it’s a statement about the future of work and development in India. By bringing advanced technological opportunities to smaller towns and villages, Vembu is challenging long-held assumptions about where innovation can thrive.
His model emphasizes community, purpose, and environmental balance—values often missing in conventional corporate setups. The result is a workplace culture that blends high productivity with well-being and belonging.
A Transformative Vision
Sridhar Vembu’s mission to democratize tech opportunities is reshaping the Indian IT narrative. As Zoho continues to grow without external funding or layoffs, its rural-first innovation model is emerging as a blueprint for sustainable, inclusive, and humane growth in the digital age.
