to its 2025 Assembly elections, political strategist and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant
Kishor (PK) has emerged as a disruptive force aiming to redefine the
state’s politics. In an in-depth interview, he outlines the vision behind Jan
Suraaj — a people-centric movement built outside the conventional political
system, rooted in reform rather than power.

Suraaj as a grassroots democratic movement, unlike parties

that “money wins elections,” PK insists all Jan Suraaj funds are raised
and spent transparently through bank transfers and cheques.
He strongly criticizes the Bihar government’s pre-poll cash transfers to women
— roughly ₹10,000 per household — calling it “state-sponsored bribery”.
“This election must be about ideas, not cash handouts,” he says.
Caste, Social Base & Voter Fatigue
Kishor openly admits
he lacks the “right caste identity” for Bihar politics. Yet, he emphasizes that
Jan Suraaj’s real strength lies in its cross-caste youth base,
mobilized through social media and grassroots outreach.
He highlights that about one-third of Bihar’s voters did not support either
of the two main alliances in the previous election — a politically
disillusioned population now ready for change.

Facing attacks from
both major alliances, PK is often labeled an “NDA proxy,” “media creation,”
or “vote-cutter.” Rather than denying the tag, he embraces it:
“If they call us
vote-cutters, it means we are shaking up their vote banks — that’s proof we’re

and candidate poaching by NDA-linked leaders, which he interprets as

Kishor says he chose not
to contest personally to avoid demotivating first-time candidates who
depend on his guidance. “If I won a seat, they’d feel secondary — that’s a
moral dilemma,” he explains.

Suraaj not as a quest for office, but a mission to rebuild Bihar from
the ground up.
Regardless of the outcome — “whether we win big or end in single digits” — PK
pledges to continue the movement for at least five years.

by decades of caste politics, corruption, and poverty.
He predicts that the upcoming election will mark the beginning of a new era,

Suraaj and not contest yourself?
PK: I wanted this to be about change, not personal power. Contesting
might discourage new candidates who look to me for guidance. This is about
moral leadership, not titles.
Q: Who is Jan
Suraaj’s core voter?
PK: The youth — especially young men. They’re frustrated with old
politics. Women, particularly in rural areas, still support Nitish Kumar due to
welfare schemes, but the youth are driving change.
Q: Are your
candidates being intimidated or poached?
PK: Yes, especially by the NDA. This shows their nervousness about our
growing influence.
Q: Where does your
campaign funding come from?
PK: All our funds are transparent — via cheques or bank transfers. If
anyone can prove wrongdoing, let them. The real “cash-for-votes” comes from the
state distributing money before polls.
Q: What about caste
and alliances?
PK: I don’t have a caste base, but I have youth across all groups.
One-third of voters rejected both main alliances — they’re our potential base.
Q: What if you win
only a few seats?
PK: We’ve come too far to stop. Even with a few seats, we’ll keep
building this movement for at least five years.
Q: Rajdeep
Sardesai: You’re called a
“vote-cutter,” “proxy,” or “media creation.” How do you respond?
PK: I take it as a compliment. Being called a vote-cutter means we’re
disrupting their comfort zone. Their labels reveal their fear.
Q: How is Bihar
different from your past campaigns?
PK: Bihar’s stagnation is deep — poverty, caste divides, hopelessness.
But we’re trying to turn that hopelessness into hope.
Q: Why haven’t
agencies like ED or CBI gone after you?
PK (laughing): Rajdeep, maybe you should ask the government! We’ve
nothing to hide. Our accounts and operations are completely transparent.
