LPG Price Hike in India: Global Conflict Triggers Domestic Pressure

India has witnessed a sharp increase in LPG prices from March 7, reflecting turbulence in global energy markets amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The escalation involving Iran, Israel, and the strategic interests of the United States has begun to ripple through global oil and gas supply chains, affecting prices in energy-importing countries like India.

Price Hike Details

The latest revision affects both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders:

  1. Domestic LPG (14.2 kg cylinder): Price increased by around ₹60 per cylinder.
  2. Commercial LPG (19 kg cylinder): Price increased by around ₹115 per cylinder.

These hikes are expected to directly impact household cooking costs as well as operating expenses for restaurants, hotels, and small food businesses.

Global Trigger: West Asia Tensions

The price increase is linked to rising tensions and potential conflict risks in West Asia, particularly involving Iran and Israel.

Energy analysts warn that:

  1. Shipping routes in the Persian Gulf region face uncertainty.

  2. Crude oil and LPG benchmarks have begun reacting to the geopolitical risk premium.

  3. Supply disruptions could occur if the conflict escalates further.

Because India imports a large share of its LPG requirements, global price spikes quickly translate into domestic price revisions.

Government Position

The hike comes just a day after India’s Petroleum Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, publicly stated that fuel availability in the country remains comfortable and that India has diversified its energy sourcing.

However, market volatility has forced pricing adjustments despite these assurances.

Political Reactions

The opposition has quickly seized on the issue, arguing that the price hike will add pressure to household budgets.

Key critics include:

  1. Mallikarjun Kharge

  2. Mamata Banerjee

They claim the increase reflects poor price management and inadequate protection for consumers during global energy shocks.

Impact on Households and Welfare Schemes

One major concern is the effect on beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a flagship program that provides LPG connections to low-income households.

Experts fear that:

  1. Rising refill costs may discourage usage.

  2. Some families may revert to firewood, biomass, or kerosene, undermining clean-cooking goals.

Strategic Energy Concerns

The situation has also raised broader policy questions:

  1. Are India’s LPG reserves adequate for prolonged disruptions?

  2. Is import diversification sufficient to cushion supply shocks?

  3. Should India increase strategic reserves of LPG similar to crude oil reserves?

Given India’s heavy dependence on imported hydrocarbons, sustained instability in the Middle East could translate into repeated price shocks for Indian consumers.

A Potential Political Flashpoint

If the West Asia conflict deepens and energy prices remain elevated, LPG prices could become a major political issue, similar to past controversies around petrol and diesel pricing.

With multiple state elections approaching and economic pressures already affecting households, the issue could gain significant traction in national political debates in the coming months.
