TVK Government Seeks Hosur–Bengaluru Metro Link and Ramanathapuram Airport
Development
Tamil Nadu’s transport connectivity push focuses on
cross-border metro expansion and regional aviation, while the Parandur airport
project takes a different direction.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief
Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has highlighted the importance of improving Tamil
Nadu’s transport infrastructure through better interstate connectivity and
regional development. Two proposals of particular interest are the
Hosur–Bengaluru Metro link and the proposed Ramanathapuram airport.
Although both initiatives aim to improve connectivity and
support economic growth, they are at different stages of planning and approval.
Hosur–Bengaluru Metro: A Push for Interstate Connectivity
The proposed metro connection between Hosur in Tamil Nadu
and Bengaluru in Karnataka is intended to strengthen links between two major
industrial and employment centres.
The Tamil Nadu government has urged the Union government to
expedite approval for extending Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Yellow Line from
Bommasandra towards Hosur.
The proposed connection could benefit industrial workers,
businesses and commuters travelling between Hosur and Bengaluru. Hosur’s
expanding manufacturing sector and its proximity to Bengaluru make improved
public transport connectivity an important regional infrastructure issue.
However, the project still requires the necessary technical
assessments, inter-state coordination, funding arrangements and government
approvals before implementation can proceed.
Ramanathapuram Airport: Regional Development Priority
The proposed Ramanathapuram airport is a separate regional
connectivity initiative that could improve access to southern Tamil Nadu.
The airport could support tourism to destinations such as
Rameswaram, improve business travel and create opportunities for economic
development across Ramanathapuram district.
Reports in October 2026 indicated that a site at Manikaneri,
covering approximately 600 acres, had been identified for the proposed airport.
The project must still progress through the required approvals and planning
processes; site identification alone does not mean construction has been
authorised.
The proposal should also be distinguished from earlier
discussions about providing civilian services through the Indian Navy’s INS
Parundu air station near Uchippuli.
Parandur Airport: A Separate Policy Decision
The proposed second airport for Chennai at Parandur is a
different matter. On August 24, 2026, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced
in the Legislative Assembly that the TVK government would abandon the project,
citing concerns associated with agricultural land, water bodies and local
livelihoods.
The government has also considered alternative approaches to
meeting Chennai’s long-term aviation needs, including expanding capacity at the
existing Meenambakkam airport and examining other possible locations.
Consequently, Ramanathapuram airport should not be described
as a replacement for Parandur. It is a separate regional proposal with its own
objectives and approval requirements.
The Road Ahead
The Hosur–Bengaluru Metro link and Ramanathapuram airport
represent two different dimensions of Tamil Nadu’s connectivity agenda:
metropolitan transport integration and regional aviation development.
The key measures of progress will be formal government
approvals, funding commitments, completion of feasibility studies and the
commencement of implementation.
For residents and businesses, the ultimate significance of
these proposals will depend on whether they translate into accessible
transport, improved regional economic opportunities and practical benefits for
local communities.
