Zoho’s Arattai messaging app has rocketed to the top of India’s app charts, driven by a surge of patriotic sentiment, official government endorsements, and rising anxieties over Big Tech surveillance. The app, branded as a “spyware-free, privacy-first, made-in-India” alternative to WhatsApp and Telegram, has seen a 100x jump in daily sign-ups, catapulting it into the national spotlight.

Why Arattai Soared

The meteoric rise was sparked by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other senior officials, who endorsed Arattai under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, calling on citizens to adopt homegrown platforms.

Growing calls for “digital sovereignty” and backlash against U.S. tariffs on Indian goods further accelerated adoption, with Arattai positioned as a symbol of resistance to foreign tech dominance.

Privacy was another key factor: Arattai’s promise not to monetize user data or deploy spyware resonated with citizens weary of global scandals around digital surveillance.
